SOCCER NEWS

On Sunday, December 3, the Men’s ‘B’ team hosted Camolin Celtic in a league game and won by 3-1. This well deserved win brought an end to their recent string of poor results thanks to goals from Niall Finn, Tom Fitzgerald and James Gahan.

Playing without regular goalie Bobby Larkin, the Men’s ‘A’ team had their backs to the wall when visitors Taghmon united went 0-3 ahead early in the second half. Our lads had gone into the break 0-2 down and Taghmon seemed to have sealed maximum points when they scored their third goal. But Brian ‘Bro’ O’Loughlin converted a penalty shortly after this and the fightback began. Piling pressure on Taghmon, Matthew Dunne sent a sweet pass across to Mark Brady, who headed in our second goal. Brian ‘Bro’ was charged with converting another penalty five minutes from full-time and he duly obliged to make the final score 3-3 and rescure a valuable league point.

The referee had to take a firm hand on proceedings when our under-14 girls faced Bridge Rovers in a top-of-the-table clash on Saturday, December 2. Emerson Doran scored all three of our girls’ goals to help them win the hotly contested game by 3-2. The Youths’ team played Kilmore on the day and won by 6-3. Nathan Dixon netted twice early in play and Jamie Depsey brought the score to 3-0 before the break. Nathan completed his hat-trick soon after the resumption and not long after that, Kilmore had a man sent off.

As often happens, this spurred them on and they pulled two goals back in quick succession to leave the score at 4-2. But any hope Kilmore were harbouring evaporated when they gifted an own goal to our lads. They still battled bravely and pulled another goal back only to have substitute Ciarán Walsh head home our sixth goal near the end.
