A white wedding at the Cathedral!

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

WHILE there were blizzard like conditions sweeping through the town on Friday with the onset of Storm Emma, one young couple were determined not to let it spoil their day as they battled through the elements to get to St Aidan’s Cathedral to get married.

Originally from Dublin, Donna Hevey and Sebastian Kearney have been living in Cluain Buí in Enniscorthy for the past year and had put in months of planning for a fairytale wedding in the Cathedral on Friday of last week. While Storm Emma proved a major hindrance, it definitely wasn’t going to stand in the way of true love and the pair went to great lengths to get to the church on time.

‘It went very well considering,’ Donna laughed. ‘It was a little bit stressful there at one stage when we didn’t know if we were going to make it to the church at all. Then my hairdresser organised for a tractor to give us a lift to the Cathedral so we made it in the end and were able to get married.’

While you can’t fault the happy couple’s determination, perhaps the only down side was that a number of their guests, understandably, couldn’t make it to the ceremony.

‘A lot of my family are living locally, so most of my family were here,’ said the blushing bride. ‘Unfortunately a lot of Sebastian’s family were due to travel down from Dublin and they just couldn’t make it in the storm.’

Typically after a wedding, you might be accustomed to a dusting of confetti and tin cans being dragged behind some kind of luxury car. On this occasion, however, the happy couple got more than a dusting of snow and were braced for a slippery walk back home.

‘We were all set to walk back home afterwards,’ said Donna. ‘But thankfully a passer-by saw us and picked us up, which was lovely. We were supposed to have the reception in Dublin, but obviously we couldn’t get there. We rang around the local hotels and unfortunately they couldn’t accommodate us, so afterwards everyone came back to our house for some dinner and a few drinks. It was really lovely and we had a great day.’

The newly-weds are now planning a weekend break to Galway before heading off to a bit of sun further down the line. One thing is for sure, it was an unforgettable wedding day.

‘That’s the thing,’ Donna laughed. ‘It is a great story to tell. It’s one that we’ll tell our children about in the future.’
