Stu­dents scoop top sci­ence prize

STU­DENTS from Meanscoil Ghar­man man­aged to scoop a ma­jor prize re­cently at the Cal­mast Sci­ence Fair in Water­ford In­sti­tute of Tech­nol­ogy. Conn Caomhá­nach and Con Ó Meachair man­aged to pick up the Sci­ence Foun­da­tion Ire­land Best Project Award at Scifest for their project ‘In­ves­ti­gat­ing the Ef­fects of E.M. Pro­bi­otics’.

By win­ning this award, the stu­dents now qual­ify to ex­hibit at the Scifest 2018 Na­tional Fi­nal and to com­pete for the Scifest 2018 Sci­ence Foun­da­tion Ire­land ISEF Award. If they emerge suc­cess­ful, they will com­pete for the award which in­cludes an all-ex­penses-paid trip to rep­re­sent Ire­land at the 2019 ISEF com­pe­ti­tion in Phoenix Ari­zona.

Scifest aims to pro­mote STEM sub­jects, while giv­ing stu­dents of all abil­i­ties the op­por­tu­nity to de­velop their re­search, prob­lem solv­ing, crit­i­cal think­ing and pre­sen­ta­tion skills.

Conn and Con are de­lighted to have scooped this award and ev­ery­one at the school is hopeful that they can progress even fur­ther, fly­ing the flag for En­nis­cor­thy along the way.

‘ This is a huge achieve­ment for Meán­scoil Ghar­man as the school strives to foster these skills through the medium of Ir­ish,’ said teacher Elaine Nic Réamoinn, who will con­tinue to work with the stu­dents on their project over the sum­mer. ‘We will them all the best with their re­search.’
