Huge emergency response to incident in Bellefield

-

WAILING sirens could be heard all over Enniscorthy on Friday evening as emergency services rushed to a scene at Bellefield Springs.

Initial reports received by gardaí at around 3.30 p.m. suggested that a car had ploughed into a group of four pedestrians at the housing estate, sparking a panic which saw ambulances, fire engines, and several gardaí, including member of the armed response unit rush to the scene. As it turned out, the incident was relatively minor and involved a road traffic collision and a family dispute.

A garda spokesman said that the driver of the vehicle, a resident of the estate, had had an argument with his partner and children. They had gotten out of the vehicle and he sped off, colliding with a parked car. At this point, the woman who had gotten out of the car attempted to take the keys from her partner, but he drove off, causing her to fall and graze her knees.

Emergency services were quick to arrive at the scene and gardaí took statements from witnesses and those involved.

‘ The way it was reported at the time, it sounded much worse than it actually was,’ a garda spokesman said in relation to the response. ‘As it turned out it was a minor road traffic collision. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.’

The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
