Tex memorial helps local causes

-

THE organisers of the annual Robert ‘Tex’ Byrne Memorial Hurling Tournament were delighted to make a presentation to three extremely worthy local causes at Bellefield GAA Complex recently. An avid sportsman, having lined out for the Rapps regularly as well as representing his county at minor level, Tex was extremely well-known in the local community and the annual tournament which bears his name is a fitting tribute to the man.

This year saw four clubs take part. The Rapparees, the Shamrocks, Monageer-Boolavogue and Cloughbawn all lined out. The two Enniscorthy clubs came through their semi-finals to set up a grudge match in the final to lift the Tex Byrne trophy. Despite being a competitive affair, the games were played in great spirit before the Shamrocks eventually claimed bragging rights. There was also a mini-blitz which saw the underage teams from each club line out against each other on the day as well.

‘It was a great day,’ said Seamus Byrne, Tex’s brother. ‘We had a great crowd and it was a real community effort. I’d like to thank all the local businesses who really helped us out as well as our referees Dave O’Leary and Martin Armstrong and Bull and Max for the music - all of them game their time freely.

With the money raised on the day, the committee were able to donate €1,000 each to St Mary’s Cemetery and Enniscorthy Meals on wheels as well as two flat screen TVs for St John’s Hospital. This is the third year the memorial tournament has taken place and it’s not only become a great family day out, but a great fundraiser for wonderful local causes. Seamus was keen to thank everyone who helped out on the day, donated money or prizes or helped in any way in the event’s continued success.
