We have qualified for the Leinster quarter-final of the Barton Shield which will be in Mount Wolseley on Friday, July 20, against Tullamore.

We hosted the regional qualifiers for the Jimmy Bruen Shield. A total of 18 teams participated in stroke play qualifying on Saturday, with the four lowest scoring teams advancing to the matchplay stage on Sunday morning

Enniscorthy were first out at 8 a.m. alongside Bunclody. Playing from back tees on the Saturday on a breezy day made for challenging playing conditions for all pairings, so congratulations to our five pairings for finishing in the all-important top four of the qualifiers along with New Ross, Waterford and Wexford.

Our team played New Ross on the Sunday as a result of qualifying from the strokeplay stage, and unfortunately lost on a scoreline of three games to one, with the final game being called in on the 20th.

Commiserations to all players and managers concerned for the effort in getting this far. P.J. Dempsey and his staff had the course in fantastic condition for the hosting of this prestigious competition and we hope all competitors enjoyed their day.

The team on Sunday was James Morrissey and Eddie Balfe (called in), Seán Hegarty and James Foley (lost), David Mernagh and Anthony Byrne (lost), Adam Jordan and Eddie Doyle (won), and Frankie Morrissey and Conor Flynn (lost). They were managed by Paul Connolly and Brian Balfe.

We played Borris, Rosslare, Courtown, Wexford, Wa- terford, New Ross, Coollattin, Bunclody and Ballymoney in the Junior Cup group qualifiers, and that is the order they finished in after the first day’s play with Enniscorthy winning by three.

The final, against Borris, was played on Sunday morning and we won on a scoreline of three games to two to succeed in our regional qualifier and advance to the Leinster finals weekend in Carlow on July 28 and 29.

This makes it three years in succession that we have won our qualifying round. Brian Balfe, Joe Delaney and James Morrissey got the wins while Joe Kelly and Martin Sludds battled hard before eventually losing to our Borris opponents.

David Mernagh also played his part in the win, having played in the qualifier before being replaced by Brian Balfe for the matchplay. Congratulations to all concerned.

The Provincial Towns Cup team had a great win against Courtown, winning four matches at home and two matches away (6.5 to 2.5), with the final match at home called in.

Willie Dobbs and Thomas Kielthy got the all-important away wins while Davie Murphy, Eddie Balfe, James Sheridan and Anthony Byrne got the wins at home.

Eddie Doyle was called in at home while James Foley and Denis Dunbar fought hard before going down in Courtown.

Next up was a quarter-final against Waterford. We had five games away with four games at home, and we are very pleased to report that we won to advance to the semi-final against Tulfarris.

Davie Murphy, Eddie Doyle and Denis Dunbar got the wins at home, with Eddie Balfe and Charlie Hogg getting the away wins.

James Sheridan, Willie Dobbs and Bill Whelan put in strong performances away but unfortunately lost. Anthony Byrne was called in.

Congratulations to all players involved and to the management team of John Byrne and Fintan O’Sullivan.

The semi-final against Tulfarris is fixed for Sunday, July 15, at 3.30 p.m., with five matches at home and four in Tulfarris. Well done to all concerned.

In the Senior Cup, with 49 entries, we had a bye into the quarter-final and then played Mount Juliet in the regional qualifiers, winning 3-2.

The semi-final pitted us against Kilkenny and the scoreline was 3.5 to 1.5 in our favour. On a roll now, the team were in a buoyant mood facing Carlow in the final and came home victorious on a scoreline of 3-2.

Congratulations to all concerned on a series of fantastic performances. Jason Rackard, Graham Donohoe and Dayle Donohoe won their games, Nigel Cullen was called in, and Maurice Donohoe put in a great effort before losing his game.

The team was managed by Eddie Doyle. The Leinster finals weekend is in Mount Juliet on August 24 and 25.

To summarise, this all means we have now qualified for Leinster finals weekends for the Barton Shield, Junior Cup and Senior Cup.

Our Provincial Towns Cup team (the current champions) are at the semi-final stage. Our success thus far is testament to all the hard work everyone involved puts in to representing our club and long may it continue.

Why not join the club and see for yourself what makes this club so good? Junior coaching is top of the range, the facilities are brilliant, and the course has to be one of the best in the region as it has the strange ability to be a challenge for the expert and a pleasure for the novice golfer at the same time. Yes, we don’t understand it either but that is the way it is!
