NEWROSSSENIORS

-

On a busy week, our first stop was at the picturesque Faithlegg Golf Club situated on the Waterford Estuary. We received a warm welcome from the C.E.O. of the club, Karl Cullen, who, despite having another engagement, waited to greet our group before commencing play.

On a rather pleasant day at the end of July, although a wee bit breezy, the ten teams really enjoyed themselves on a course in splendid condition, none more so than the winning combination of our popular champagne scramble, Tommy Liston (7), Michael Gannon (18), Tony Sexton (21) and Les Jastrebski (25).

They brought in a terrific score of 101 points to emerge clear winners with a bit to spare. Second on 94 points came Willie Byrne (16), Mikey Lee (19), Michael Brennan (20) and Aidan Wallace (27), whilst third on the same score (94 points) were a three-person team comprised of Tom Tyler (15), Francis Coghlan (16) and Martin Forristal (20).

Filling the fourth spot with 93 points were Denis Kirwan (12), Jim ‘Ross’ Ryan (17), Willie Naddy (20) and Jamesie Murphy (24), and the fifth prize went to John Kennedy (16), John Joe Murray (21), Pat Butler (24) and Martin Burke (26) with 92 points.

Back on home soil on Thursday on another breezy day, we had drama galore with the team filling the number one spot being disqualified for a breach of the rules.

It was the unlucky 13th hole that proved their undoing as the banker failed to record the correct score- or as some wag put it, ‘he failed to balance the books’. It wasn’t finished there either as it took a countback over the last nine holes before we could find the winners.

By virtue of a better back nine (48/46), Tony Harford (13), Larry Shannon (20), Mick Long (21) and Tom Kent (26) took the honours with 98 points.

Placed second on the same score were Kevin Treacy (18), Patsy Farrell (20), Les Jastrebski (25) and Martin Burke (26). The third spot went to John Fitzpatrick (19), Dan Quigley (20), Robert O’Dwyer (21) and Colin Casey (22).

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Michael Gannon on the ninth hole and Mikey Lee on the eleventh. On the board for August are Willie Naddy, John Murphy and Brian Dolan.

Next Thursday sees the running of the club classic, and our next outing is at Dungarvan Golf Club on Monday, August 13.
