GOREYCRICKET

-

Gorey Seniors maintained their relentless pursuit of the Cricket Leinster Division 14 trophy with an emphatic victory over Knockharley 3, winning by 154 runs.

Having won the toss, Gorey was inspired by Captain Anslem Diaz and his 76 runs, as Knockharley were all out for 45, chasing 201 - 1-16 Umar Khan, 2-59 Brian Willoughby, 3-97 Pradeep H Gamage, 4-127 Anslem Diaz, 5-173 Khalid Ambroze, 6-180 Roger Spengler, 7-180 Razwan Ahmed.

Previously, Gorey defeated Clontarf 6 by four wickets, winning 89 for six with Philip Leonard getting 27 runs.

Remaining matches against Laois 3, Wexford Wanderers 2, Tyrellstown 2 (our nearest challengers) and Knockharley will conclude an eventful season in only our third year of existence, with just two years playing competitively.

Sandwiched between these crucial games is the Dick O’Neill final, hosted in Courtown between Gorey and Knockharley 3 on Sunday, August 19, at 12 noon.

This trophy is a second tier competition involving the Midlands and S.E. region and is run by the Midland League. Our club is confident of securing our first-ever silverware, having competed gallantly in the C.L. Russell Court final recently, succumbing in the last over, and are determined to atone for that loss.

Our Taverners recently defeated Wicklow County who made 108 runs: Reiner Garz 2-14, Roger Spengler 1-2, Gary Murphy 1-12, Allan Holman 1-16.

Gorey 110-2: Razwan Ahmed 23, retired off six balls, Brady Archer 22 not out, Hassan Tariq 17 not out.

Upcoming games against Mount Juliet and Lismore are planned in the near future.

The Juniors will conclude their season on August 20 (Lismore the exception) having played against our near neighbours Wexford with both hard and softball teams.

A match is also planned for our ladies on August 28, acknowledging the growing numbers to supplement the talent already there, an ambition that may soon be realised over next season.
