For those of you looking for some competitive golf on a Friday to start off the weekends early, we are now organising an open gents’ singles stableford competition on September 7.

Additionally, we are going to have nine-hole ladies’ and gents’ evening competitions on Friday, August 17 (a four club challenge, the only clubs you are allowed to bring are a putter and three other clubs of your choice, and August 24 (four-person scramble).

The cost of entry each week will be €6 and will include a burger afterwards.

Why not start your weekends with a fun nine-hole competition on a Friday evening?

The first leg of the final of the Provincial Towns Challenge Cup against Dunmurry Springs took place in Enniscorthy on Saturday in atrocious weather conditions for the full duration of play.

However, both teams played through the rain for almost six hours with a reduced amount of support in attendance than what would normally have been expected.

Play started off the white plates at 1.30 p.m. and first up was Eddie Balfe who won 5/3, then Eddie Doyle won 2/1, with Denis Dunbar losing 2/1.

James Sheridan won 5/3, and Brian Sinnott had to go to two extra play-off holes before losing by one stroke.

Thomas Kielthy won 5/4, Charlie Hogg lost 3/2, Anthony Byrne lost 2/1, and finally Davey Murphy, playing with an injured knee, lost 6/4.

Overall this meant a five to four victory for Dunmurry Springs. It was a very close match overall, and the tenth and 14th holes were our undoing, but we live to fight another day on Saturday, August 25, when the return leg will be played.

We are proposing to run a bus or two and anyone interested in using this option should register their interest with John Byrne ASAP so we can get an idea of numbers and organise same.

On Monday, August 20, the course will be closed until 1 p.m. due to verti drainage works.

Mary Breen and Eddie Doyle have very kindly agreed to look after the Sunday evening mixed this year. There is always a shotgun start at 6 p.m.

Entry will be €5 with food included afterwards. Get your name down now for a fun night to be had by all. We would especially like to see some of our new members join in. The next one is scheduled for August 19.

The draws for the club singles, club fourball and the club mixed foursomes have been made and are displayed in the locker-rooms.

The semi-final is due to be completed by August 26 where David Morton and Martin Sludds and Rory McCauley and Michael Murphy will do battle, and the final is scheduled for September 16.

The semi-final is due to be completed by August 19 where Shane Fortune and Eddie Doyle will play Joe Delaney and Philip Browne, and David Mahon and Jim Doran will play Barry Bolger and Con Fleming, and the final is scheduled for September 16.
