Bonus point Enniscorthy success

ENNISCORTHY 43 BOYNE 8

WHEN SCRUM-HALF Arthur Dunne dotted down after just three minutes of play, it looked like it was going to be a long day for visitors Boyne at the Ross Road on Saturday.

So it proved to be, but it did take Enniscorthy a further 50 minutes before they sealed their Leinster League Division 1A win with a bonus point try from wing David O’Dwyer.

In all they scored six tries in a comprehensive victory and maintained their position at the top of the table.

Enniscorthy started this game with intent. After only three minutes they attacked down the right side and released wing Ivan Jacob who made great ground before transferring to scrum-half Arthur Dunne, and he scored near the posts which out-half Ivan Poole converted.

Three minutes later Boyne reduced the deficit with a penalty kick. Midway through the half, after sustained pressure from the pack, Ivan Poole kicked a penalty, and then number 8 Timmy Morrissey forced his way over for the hosts’ second try, again converted by Poole.

Five minutes before the interval, Boyne scored their only try when their out-half intercepted a pass and ran in from 30 metres. This left the score at 17-8 at the break.

Enniscorthy were by far the superior team after the interval and were rewarded with four well-taken tries.

The half was barely five minutes old when Arthur Dunne, who had a fine game at scrum-half, scored his second try with a wonderful break down the middle.

Enniscorthy ramped up the pressure again, and wing David O’Dwyer scored in the left corner for their fourth and bonus point try.

On 60 minutes, lock Tomás Stamp scored their next try and popped up ten minutes later to score again.

With two more conversions from Poole and one from centre Killian Lett, this brought their final tally to 43 points.

‘We are very happy with the performance today, the momentum is building in the squad,’ team captain Tom Ryan said.

‘The training has been very good over the past few weeks with big numbers. We need to keep this going.’

Enniscorthy play Dundalk at home next Saturday at 2 p.m. in the All-Ireland Junior Cup quarter-final.

Enniscorthy: Angelo Todisco (James Doyle, 65), Davy Murphy, Paddy Waters, Tomás Stamp, Liam Stamp (Luke Cummins, HT), Tom Ryan (capt.), (Murt Kehoe, 70), Nick Doyle, Timmy Morrissey (Brian Bolger, 70), Arthur Dunne, Ivan Poole, David O’Dwyer, Killian Lett, Daniel Pim, Ivan Jacob (Hugh O’Neill, 60), Jack Kelly.
