Man is jailed for 10 months

THE wife of a 26-year-old defendant ran from the courtroom at Gorey District Court in tears as her husband was sentenced to ten months in prison for repeatedly driving without insurance.

John Murphy (26) with addresses at 32 Woodbine Close, New Ross and 92 Gimont Avenue had no cover when stopped by gardaí at Clonroche on November 7, 2016; at Cross Street in New Ross on November 28, 2016; and at Knockavilla on January 19, 2015.

The court noted that the accused had an ‘appalling record’, which included at least four previous counts of driving without insurance.

Judge Gerard Haughton pointed out that the November 7 offence was committed on the same day that he was convicted of a similar offence.
