Long-running hit and run case finalised

-

A LONG-RUNNING hit and run case was finalised at the District Court in Wexford, more than six years after the accident which led to the prosecution of camper van driver Silvar Tillison, with an address at 167 Madeira Oaks, Enniscorthy.

The court was reminded that the van collided with a couple of cars on its way to the beach at Ballinesker in Curracloe on the afternoon March 11, 2012 but did not remain at the scene.

However, gardaí quickly identified the now 50-year-old meat factory worker as the culprit who was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

It was later confirmed, not only that he was over the limit for alcohol, but also that he had no insurance cover.

The case was repeatedly adjourned to allow him come up with €5,000 compensation, a repayment process which he eventually completed.

Solicitor Peter Crean told the court his client was living in Ireland for at least 13 years.

The inevitable disqualification from driving would dictate either a change of job or a change of address, Mr Crean suggested as Tillison lives at least ten miles from his place of work.

Convictions were imposed for driving without insurance (fine €200), for drink driving (fine €500) and for dangerous driving (fine €300).

The defendant was put off the road for three years, with effect from March 1.
