Charged with handling proceeds of crime

-

TWO defendants with Enniscorthy addresses have been sent forward to the next sitting of the Circuit for trial on charges involving handling the proceeds of crime.

Melik Ahmad (42) of Bora House, Rectory Road, Enniscorthy and Vesma Velicko (31) of Villa Alta, Rectory Road, were both present in court as the order was made.

Ahmad was charged with possessing property that was the proceeds of crime, namely €8,500, at AIB Bank on Westmoreland Street, Dublin 2, on February 28 last. Meanwhile, his co-accused Velicko was charged with engaging in the transfer of the proceeds of criminal conduct, the €8,500, at AIB Bank, Slaney Place, Enniscorthy, on the same day.

No evidence was heard in court on this occasion and the pair stood stony-faced as the Judge made the order sending them forward for trial on the charges.

He warned them that if an alibi formed any part of their defence, they had 14 days to furnish details to the DPP.

Velicko’s barrister raised the issue of reducing signing on conditions and pointed out that an application was before the High Court in relation to this. Judge Haughton said that he wouldn’t amend them on this occasion, but he said it was something that could be otherwise agreed in writing with gardaí.
