NEWROSSSENIORS

The Met Eireann morning weather forecast said rain on the east coast during Thursday afternoon, but thankfully it did not spread in as far as the golf course in Tinneranny. After all the downpours of the days beforehand, the course was as dry as the proverbial bone - testament to the care and attention it has received from Seamus and his staff down the years.

The greens were a tad slow on previous weeks which was to be expected having being saturated in the last week or so, and there were many tales of putts being left short of the cup all day on many of the 18 holes.

However, with the bunkers out of play, some cracking good scores were still recorded with nine of the 13 competing teams carding 90 points or better, proving once again that the champagne scramble format is the ideal and most enjoyable one for our veteran golfers.

We even had a photo-finish to decide the winners, with one point separating the victors from the runners-up.

Michael Kavanagh (16), Robert O’Dwyer (22), Frank Boyle (23) and Jamesie Murphy (24), gelling well as a team, were tops, and number one in the race to the finish with a terrific score of 100 points.

One point behind and placed second were Patsy Farrell (20), Martin Forristal (21), Mick Wade (22) and Martin Furlong (22).

The 93 points courtesy of a better back nine (46/44) saw Hughie O’Connor (19), John Murphy (20), Tony Sexton (22) and Tom Kent (25) secure third prize.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Denis Kirwan on the ninth hole and Michael Kavanagh on the eleventh.

Next Thursday, November 15, we will run our annual benefit day for St. Vincent De Paul. Playing our normal competition, the entry fee will be €5 or more if you can afford it.

If you cannot play, all donations will be greatly appreciated towards this worthy cause and we will have a raffle as well, so bring a few extra Euro with you on Thursday.

Best wishes go to our colleague, Dan Quigley, recovering well after his recent accident - hope to see you back soon, Dan.
