CHURCH NEWS

PARISH COMMITTEE MEETING – This took place recently, it was another of series concerned with the improvements taking place in our Parish Hall. New windows and dooors have been installed, full insulation of the roof and wal;ls has been completed, a fire alarm system has been put in along with new wiring for the whole building and the electrical supply has been upgraded. Painting remains to be done and a new set of curtains for the stage and the hall windows is needed.

150TH ANNIVERSARY – The building of our church here in Monageer begain in April 18570 when the foundation stone was laid. The new church was dedicated/blessed by Bishop Thomas Furlong on November 1, 1871. On that day, one reporter commented the church was crowded to inconvenience. Hence our church will be 150 years in used as a place of worship on November 1, 2021. that in three years from now. We will no doubt celebrate this important parish occasion in some appropriate manner.

It is likely that the anniversary may be marked by the production of a book, just as we did for the centenary of Monageer School in 2014. Monageer Past and Present was a fine and interesting vbolume produced in 2013 abourt parish life then and now. By the way the big word for a 150th anniversary is sesquicentenary, a word which means ‘a centenary more by one half’.
