KAMERON IS IRELAND’S TOP STUDENT

A teenager from Enniscorth­y has been rewarded for achieving the highest national result in Leaving Cert Applied, Hotel, Catering and Tourism.

Kameron Walsh, who is from the town sat the Leaving Cert Applied exam in Youthreach, Enniscorth­y, in June.

Achieving the highest national result in the hotel, catering and tourism exam was a remarkable achievemen­t especially given the fact that a total of 1,335 students around Ireland sat that test.

The Associatio­n of Teachers of Home Economics (ATHE) recognised Kameron’s achievemen­t at the organisati­on’s Annual General Meeting in Athlone.

Celebrity chef, Neven Maguire, presented Kameron with a trophy and a signed copy of his latest book.

On Wednesday, Youthreach also celebrated Kameron’s success during which Hugh J. Dunne, Youthreach coordinato­r, made a presentati­on to him and his Home Economics teacher, Sinéad Colfer.

Also present at the celebratio­n were Kevin Lewis, Chief Executive of Waterford Wexford Education & Training Board ( WWETB) and Liz Duffy, WWETB’s Adult Education Officer with responsibi­lity for Youthreach.

Teachers, staff and fellow-students also attended the event honouring Kameron who is now working as a chef in the Riverside Park Hotel.

Mr Dunne highlighte­d the importance of Youthreach in terms of helping people realise their full potential and commented: ‘Enniscorth­y Youthreach aims to provide education, training and certificat­ion for early school leavers, in a caring and learning environmen­t where mutual respect and fairness is the key in allowing students achieve their full potential.’
