GOREY HOCKEY

-

It was a busy weekend of travel for Gorey Hockey Club.

Our ladies’ team visited Kilcock to play North Kildare in the league. Gorey won a tough game against a dangerous side.

Gorey had most of the possession in the Kildare half. Great work from Ailbhe Booth and Muireann Deegan kept possession and ran the ball into the circle.

North Kildare were always dangerous on the counter-attack, with Corina Bailey and Bridget Kenny forced to play very deep to mark their forwards.

After some threatening attacks from North Kildare and an excellent save from ’keeper Ruth Evans, Gorey had to push forward and got a well-deserved and much-needed goal after some great team passing was finished by Zoe Kenny.

The second-half saw Gorey look a bit more assured defensively as Tegan Veitch and Rachel McSwiney showed determination and a high workrate to cover back. First-half problems on the right wing were rectified.

Gorey were pushing for another goal, winning three short corners in a row, but they were unable to finish any of them.

After some great team play, Muireann Deegan got the second goal for Gorey who were able to hold North Kildare scoreless after another fabulous save from Ruth Evans ensured a clean sheet for the away team.

Team: Ruth Evans, Bridget Kenny, Corina Bailey, Sarah Merrigan, Vicky Hughes, Gráinne Watters, Ailbhe Booth, Robyn Swords, Tegan Veitch, Muireann Deegan, Zoe Kenny, Rachel McSwiney.

Gorey take on Rathgar in their next league fixture at home in Enniscorthy on December 1.

Our Under-14 girls were also on the road as they travelled to Kilkenny to play Carlow. It was another tough match with some excellent play throughout, but unfortunately the girls couldn’t get the better of a strong Carlow side.

After several postponements due to the weather, our Under-8 and Under-10 girls’ teams finally took part in their first blitzes of the year in Enniscorthy. Gorey Hockey Club were strongly represented with three teams in each age category, facing Wexford and Enniscorthy.

Everyone played brilliantly and there was great skill and talent on show, as well as a few nerves!

Playing against other teams on astroturf was a great chance to see how well all the players are developing their skills and game play, and credit is due to all the coaches involved, as well as the mammies and daddies cheering on from the sidelines.
