GAA CLUB NEWS

A large win 6-16 to 0-08 win against St Mary’s Rosslare for the under-16 hurlers in a dry but windy Tagoat on Sunday morning 18th to finish off the group stages. Again unfortunately our opponents could only manage to have 14 players so it was 14 a side but we employed a roll-on, roll off substitutions.

The boys started off at blistering pace playing with a very strong wind, notching two goals inside the first two minutes. A brilliant Johnny O’Toole run blasting to the top corner before Ben Cullen caught the puc out and pointed. Then the next puc out Kealan worked the ball to Adam Murphy and he made no mistake. The lads continued there high pressure and scored a further eight points divided between Adam, Séamus and Jason. With 13 gone, a Pad O’Connor effort for a point dropped into the net before Adam had his second while Ollie got in on the act before half time, the midfielder finishing well to the net.

In fairness to Rosslare they really upped their game in the second half the game very much even with Rosslare scoring a couple of points while Ollie and Adam kept the scoreboard ticking over with frees. In fact we didn’t score from play in the second half till the 17th minute with Adam Murphy breaking the rot. There was one more final goal with Ollie getting his second, a few minutes before the end.

The club would like to send its congratulations to Conor Sutton, who was voted Wexford FC player of the year. What a magnificent achievement for him.

In what no doubt will be a quiz question at some table quiz in years to come in the parish, what Blackwater man played hurling in the famous stadium in Boston, home to the Boston Red Sox, a baseball team? Darren Byrne appeared in both the first and second half and gave a good account of himself with Wexford unfortunately losing out in the final minute to the all-Ireland Champions.

Hard luck to Ciaran Cash and Aidan Malanowski, who were part of the St Peter’s team that lost out in the Junior A South Leinster football final. Adam Murphy played wing forward for St Peter’s against Knockbeg in the junior football championship.

Last week’s lotto results. No winner. Numbers drawn were 2, 7, 13 and 18 and the bonus four. Next jackpot €10,200. Lucky-dip winners were Marion Carroll-Murphy, Kevin, Chris and Pauric O’Toole (divided evenly im sure between the three boys ?), Keith Barrett, Oliver Murphy, Eileen Delaney and the seller’s prize Bridie Gordon.
