Kilrush book provides boost for Hope

-

THERE was a lovely Christmas bonus for The Hope Cancer Support Centre as the authors of a new book presented proceeds of €1,500 from their venture to the worthy cause. ‘It’s Never Lonely Around the Fields of Kilrush’ by Jim Ryan and Joe Tobin commits to paper some of Kilrush’s most memorable characters and history of the area and provides a snapshot of a significant period of the history of farming and rural life.

Among the items covered are the humble tractor, the beet industry, cutting the corn, livestock and animal husbandry and ‘wit, witticisms and wisdom’ from some well-known names in the local area.

The book was officially launched back in July by the legendary hurler Tony Doran and got some wonderful feedback from people in the locality, with farmer and mental health advocate George Graham and retired teacher PJ Arthur also speaking on the night. Jim was over the moon with the feedback that the book received and was delighted to be able to hand over a significant cheque to The Hope Centre to help them continue to offer a wonderful service. There are still a limited number of copies of the book available for Christmas from Steemers Newsagents in Bunclody and Candy’s of Carnew.
