Meánscoil projects set for RDS!

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

SCIENCE seems to be a real subject of choice at Meánscoil Gharman after it emerged that this year, the school has had more projects accepted to the BT Young Scientist Exhibition in Dublin’s RDS than ever before.

A total of eight transition year students have qualified to have their projects entered into this year’s exhibition which takes place from January 9 to 12.

For duo Conn Caomhánach and Conn Maher, it won’t be anything new as this is the second year they’ve qualified for the exhibition, having continued with their research at Teagasc in Johnstown Castle investigating the biological benefits of EM probiotics in agriculture.

The pair will show that, according to their research, agriculture accounts for 32% of all greenhouse gas emission to air, with fertlizer being the main source of nitrous oxide, due to the use of nitrogen fertiliser.

This year will also see a social and behavioural science project from Erin Ní Dhuibhne, Ava Ní Conchubair and Aoife Nic Giolla Bhríde. An extremely current topic, the trio have been investigating the effects of Brexit on the Irish economy, agricultural sector and impact on future generations.

Finally with the Bitcoin bubble said to have burst already in some quarters, Jake De Nógla, Adam Copeland and Seán Elphinstone’s project looks at crypto-currencies and how they revolutionise the world of economics.

All students are busy preparing ahead of the Dublin show and everyone associated with the school wishes them all the very best.
