Epic performance from Enniscorthy

-

ANOTHER great display of clinical attacking rugby saw Enniscorthy under-16 girls win their 12th game on the trot in this Leinster League Premier 1 clash played at a cold and windy Dr Hickey Park in Greystones last Saturday morning.

As impressive as their attack was, the defence proved rock solid as Greystones regularly worked good field position and met an unyielding wall wearing red, black and white.

Poor Greystones must look at the scoreline and wonder what happened. They didn’t play badly, they just ran into an Enniscorthy team playing their best rugby of the season so far.

Scorers of the Ross Roader’s 10 tries were scrum half Katie Whelan with three, open side Aoife Wafer with two, one each for full back Lauren Delaney, powerful number 8 Miria O’Dowd who is getting better with each game, hard tackling centre Mia Kelly, blind side wing forward Miriam Knoblauch and replacement centre Ellen Rogan. Wafer kicked three conversions and Kelly kicked two.

In captain Whelan and player of the match Wafer, who had an outstanding game, Enniscorthy have two of the best players at this level in the country.

But two players don’t make a team and they were well assisted by out half Aoife Codd who didn’t put a foot wrong, centre Ciara Boland who threatened every time she was in possession and hooker Lucy Egan who was a bundle of energy all day and gave the pass of the day offloading brilliantly out of the tackle to set up Whelan for her hat-trick.

Second row pair Ciara O’Leary and Taragh Cooper continued their recent good form making sure their team dominated ruck time after a shaky start.

Wingers Kaci O’Conner and Erin Cahill ran hard and shut down their speedy opposite numbers time and time again.

Two of last year’s under-14 team Brid Kavanagh and Elaine Oladiran showed again that they are not out of place at this level.

All the replacements , try scorer Rogan, Jessica Wickham, Codie Dunne, Chloe McGrath, Chelsea Ajaya and Laura Doyle came on early in the second half and all contributed brilliantly to the delight of the large group of supporters and parents watching from the stands.

The only down side to the day were serious looking injuries to both Mia Kelly and Laura Doyle.

All associated with the team wish both girls a speedy recovery. Kelly’s injury forced her to miss Davidstown/Courtnacuddy’s county Minor football final victory on Saturday night.

Her team mates Lauren Delaney, Katie Whelan and Taragh Cooper collected winners medals with Aoife Codd playing a stormer for the runners up Baile Dubh Tire.

Next game is a home Leinster league game on December 15 against Portdara who are a combination of Portarlington and Cill Dara.

Match Day Squad: Katie Whelan capt, Codie Dunne, Ciara Boland, Lauren Delaney, Miria O’Dowd, Ciara O’Leary, Mia Kelly, Taragh Cooper, Lucy Egan, Elaine Oladiran, Jessica Wickham, Aoife Wafer, Kaci O’Connor, Ellen Rogan, Brid Kavanagh, Chloe McGrath, Laura Doyle, Miriam Knoblauch, Aoife Codd, Erin Cahill and Chelsea Ajaya.
