Man who caused crash demanded ‘€10,000 and a new jeep’ off victim

-

A MAN with a Dublin address has been convicted of careless driving at the District Court after his vehicle collided with that of a local man out doing Christmas shopping on December 23 of 2016.

The incident took place at the junction of Island Road and Irish Street and saw a Mercedes SUV driven by the defendant, Aidis Jasionis (32) of 14 St James’ Court, Mountbrowne, Kilmainham, collide with an Audi A4 being driven by Mark Doran.

Jasionis was not present in court when the case was called and Inspector Sean Clince said he was keen to proceed with the case. Mr Doran gave evidence that on the day in question, Jasionis’ vehicle had pulled out from Irish Street and hit the left hand side of his car, driving him to the other side of the road.

‘I started to panic,’ he told the court. ‘ There was the smell of burning in the car and the air-bag was in my face. Then the man (Jasionis) arrived at the side of the car. I don’t know if he was trying to pull me out or what, but he said he wanted €10,000 and a new jeep.’

When asked about his injuries, Mr Doran said that his lower back was sore following the incident and that he had suffered some damage to his right shoulder from the seatbelt and his face from the air-bag being deployed.

Garda Ronan Bishop also gave evidence of his findings from the scene.

Upon hearing all of the evidence, Judge Haughton opted to convict the Dublin man in his absence, fining him €500 and disqualifying him from driving for a period of two years.
