Bennett appointed as district President

-

NEW ROSS DISTRICT GAA held their AGM in front of a large attendance in the Taghmon Camross club’s facilities recently.

It fell to the Bannow Ballymitty club to nominate the district’s president for 2019 and John Bennett was a hugely popular choice with all present. John had served as an officer of the district for many years and he admitted that he was humbled to be honoured by being asked to fill this position for the coming year.

Denis Nolan was re-elected as chairperson while PJ O’Farrell will continue as secretary. Michael Bowe and John Hanton will again act as joint treasurers and Paudie Foran retained the PRO position. Michael Wallace will continue as assistant secretary. There will be one new face on the committee this year with Ollie Somers making a welcome comeback to the district in the position of vice chairperson.

Michael Bowe raised a point with County Chairperson, Derek Kent, that received much support from the floor. The veteran Gael pointed out that while there is a large effort being made to garner respect for referees, the same efforts should be made to ensure that those collecting on gates at GAA matches should also be treated with respect. He asked that all clubs be contacted so that this message could be driven home to their members. Michael added that this would hopefully lead to an improvement in the current situation.

There were many tributes paid to the outgoing county secretary, Margaret Doyle, with PJ O’Farrell in particular thanking her for her assistance with fixtures over the years.
