New signs to show the way around Enniscorthy town

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

VISITORS to Enniscorthy will hopefully gain some additional insight into Enniscorthy’s storied past after being included among Fáilte Ireland’s latest Historic Town Trails. New signs containing historical information and fun facts were erected at a total of eight different points around town, in the hopes of giving visitors some perspective on what they were seeing.

Signposts are now present at Market Square, the Courthouse, Parnell Road, Slaney View, Seamus Rafter Bridge, Enniscorthy Castle, St Aidan’s Cathedral and Vinegar Hill, presenting some interesting information on each.

Working with the local authority, Fáilte Ireland aimed to uncover interesting and lesser known stories from Enniscorthy’s history, with content being displayed through way-finding, interpretation, photography, maps and other signage.

The Historic Towns initiative is designed to encourage visitors to stay longer and explore the wider region and Enniscorthy and New Ross joined Lismore and Ardmore in Waterford in becoming the latest towns included in the scheme which is run through Ireland’s Ancient East.

Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Ireland’s Ancient East, Jenny De Saulles, said:‘ There is a growing tourism trend around the world for exploring local areas and uncovering their unique stories.

‘ That’s why at Fáilte Ireland we’ve worked closely with local historians to bring to life the hidden history of each town. History and storytelling are at the core of the Ireland’s Ancient East brand and the signage unveiled in Historic Towns today will really help to shape compelling and engaging visitor experiences.’
