Finishing touches to new town park
THE final list of works needed to finally complete the new town park connecting Irish Street and Convent Road were revealed to councillors at the most recent meeting of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council, amid hopes that it will open to the public ‘in the near future’.
The Orchard Park project hit a major snag earlier this year following the now infamous collapse of construction giants Carillion and its knock-on effects on sub-contractors. The Crawford Group were employed to complete the new town park which was just a few weeks away from completion in May of this year when the company went into examinership. As a result, work ground to a halt and several sub-contractors were burned for thousands of euro.
In recent months, some work on the project resumed, however, as agreements were reached and at this week’s meeting, Engineer Rory O’Mahony stated that there were only some nine items left to complete before the park is finished. Among them is the erection of entrance signs, timber screening and timber safety rails, along with the screening off of the services area, the installation of ducting for lighting and the cleaning up of the gable wall.
Mr O’Mahony said that these finishing touches would come at a cost of around €21,000. Director of Services John Carley said that he had already agreed for the works to go ahead and it was his hope to have the park ‘open in the near future’.
‘We want it done and dusted,’ he said.
