Hundreds dive into 2019 by jumping into icy waters
HUNDREDS of swimmers dived headfirst into 2019 by taking to the waters in north Wexford on New Year’s Day for two charity swims.
The first group to brave the icy waters were the Tara Vale Swimmers, with more than 200 jumping into the sea at Ballymoney beach in front of a big crowd.
The Tara Vale Swimmers, who have held the swim annually since 2006, hope this year’s event will help them pass the €150,000 mark. The money raised will be donated to Jack and Jill Foundation, North Wexford Hospice Homecare, St Patrick’s Special School, Enniscorthy, and Courtown RNLI.
The organisers thanked all who took part, all who sponsored them, Courtown RNLI for the rescue cover, and all in the Tara Vale pub for hosting an afternoon of entertainment and refreshments.
An hour after the Ballymoney swim, more than 100 people ran into the water in Cahore for the annual event in aid of Cahore Inshore Rescue Service.
Gerry O’Loughlin, honorary secretary of Cahore Inshore Rescue Service, said it was the biggest crowd he had ever seen take part in the New Year’s Day swim.
‘We had a great crowd of spectators too,’ added Gerry. ‘Everyone had a great evening after the swim and enjoyed entertainment in the Strand Bar and the Schooner.’
Cahore Inshore Rescue Services thanked all who took part, donated, sponsored and helped on the day. They also thanked Courtown Coast Guard for their help too.
