Lukie in full stride at 70th birthday bash

-

MEMBERS OF Sliabh Buidhe Rovers A.C. and many in the Ferns community joined the family in a surprise celebration for Lukie Kehoe’s 70th birthday on the Saturday before Christmas, held in The Courtyard.

A great night was had by all, and Lukie was joined by friends, family and runners from the S.B.R. club and Wexford Athletics. Lukie’s many friends danced the night away, and it was a celebration that will be long remembered.

Lukie has enjoyed a great history with S.B.R., dating back to 1966. He won his first Senior county medals in cross-country while still a youth and won county Under-18, Under-21, Novice, Intermediate, Junior and Senior titles.

He was a part of a number of winning Senior county teams and has a 2:44 marathon to his credit. Lukie also won the 1989 county veterans’ road race.

He has been a member of S.B.R. for more than 52 years and has long been one of the driving forces behind the club.

Lukie was elected Chairman in 1989 and in his time since at the helm, S.B.R. has won numerous Senior cross-country titles and Senior road race titles.

In recent years he has coached an excellent women’s team, winning medals at many county events.

One of his points of pride is the S.B.R. men’s current streak of nine consecutive Wexford Senior cross-country titles.

This run ties the longest in Athletics Ireland history at county level, shared with the prestigious Leevale A.C. in Cork.

Everyone in Ferns, Sliabh Buidhe Rovers and the Kehoe family wish Lukie a happy 70th and more great achievements to come.
