Beach memoirs to make a welcome return

- By BRENDAN KEANE

FOLLOWING a very successful first run, ‘Brighton Beach Memoirs,’ by Neil Simon, will return to the National Opera House in Wexford on February 21, 22, 23 and 26.

The production, which is being staged by Bridge Drama Group, is the organisation’s circuit entry for 2019 and will compete in eight festivals around the country during March - in a bid to qualify for the RTE All-Ireland Amateur Drama Finals which are scheduled to take place in Athlone in May.

Set in Brooklyn, New York, in 1937, the play, which is directed by Pat Whelan, focuses attention on Eugene Jerome and his family as they fight hard times and sometimes each other.

There are moments of laughter, tears and love, as ‘Eugene’ guides the audience through his memoirs giving an insight into how his family copes with life’s challenged.

All the while, with World War II looming, the audience will see Eugene’s innocence slipping away as the first important era of his life ends and a new one begins.

The cast will include: Sean Byrne (Eugene); Mairead Cummings (Blanche); Louise Wickham-Dillon (Kate); Ailbhe Tierney (Laurie); Katie Connick (Nora); Cillian Tobin (Stanley); and Paul Tobin (Jack).

Tickets are available from www.nationaloperahouse.ie or through 053 9122144.
