Moyne residents raise concerns about the condition of road

- By BRENDAN KEANE

CONCERNS relating to the condition of the road in the Moyne were raised by a member of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council at this month’s meeting in the Presentation Centre.

Cllr John O’Rourke brought the matter to the attention of officials and asked for an update on the situation as he had raised it before.

In the run up to the meeting Cllr O’Rourke had also highlighted his concerns to this newspaper and expressed frustration that the concerns of residents in the area weren’t being adequately addressed.

At the meeting Cllr O’Rourke said that while the work on the town bypass was being carried out a large amount of HGVs and diggers passed along the road in ques- tion between the Moyne and Coolnahorna.

He asked for an update in terms of when adequate work will be carried out to alleviate issues regarding the road surface condition.

In response Executive Engineer, Joanne Kehoe, said: ‘ There has been some damage to the road and whether that’s because of wear-and-tear or because of the new road [traffic] it’s hard to determine.’

‘We have applied to TII (Transport Infrastructure Ireland) for additional funding and if we are not successful it will be part of the programme for next year,’ she said.

The residents in the area also highlighted their concerns to this newspaper with one woman commenting that she had replaced two tyres on her vehicle within a very short space of time and said the damage was caused by the condition of the road.

‘It’s been an ongoing issue and the cars are being damaged,’ she said.

‘ There are a lot of people living here and we just need to have it sorted,’ she added.

Cllr O’Rourke told this newspaper that the amount of damage to the road ‘could not have been done by the amount of ordinary cars travelling on it’.

‘I don’t accept that it’s just ordinary wear-and-tear,’ he said.

He also commented that access to the road in the area was restricted until very recently so the damage couldn’t have been caused by domestic traffic.

Cllr O’Rourke also said there are other issues to do with the road in the Coolnahorna area where run-off from the road is flowing into people’s gardens.

‘ There are a lot of issues that need to be sorted,’ he told this newspaper.
