Beginning of new one calendar women’s season put on hold

-

WITH OUR inter-league schoolgirl squads in action on March 10, and St. Patricks weekend the following weekend, the decision has been taken to delay the kick-off for the new one calendar season until March 23.

It had been planned to kick-off the season next weekend, and the registration night planned for this Tuesday evening has also been put back two weeks to Tuesday, March 12.

Our Under-13 and Under-15 representative squads travelled to Coolock on Saturday to take on the Metropolitan Schoolgirls League in their third round of group games in the Gaynor Cup qualifiers.

Wexford were unbeaten going into both games but got off to the worst possible start when two early goals for the home team put them in control.

Wexford showed good character to pull one back through an Ana Dragusan free-kick. The visitors were getting back into the game when disaster struck on the stroke of half-time as M.G.L. scored to make it 3-1 at the break.

The Dublin side continued to control the game in the second-half, scoring two more before Emma Cullen pulled one back, but a late goal for the home side wrapped up a flattering 6-2 win.

The Under-15 side were next up and went into the game with a similar record to the Under-13s, having won their opening two games against Kildare and Carlow.

This game was played at a furious pace from start to finish and both sides produced some slick passing on an excellent all-weather surface.

With both teams creating chances, M.G.L. took the lead when Wexford failed to clear a corner but, early in the second-half, Amy Shannon scored to bring the sides level.

Ten minutes later, the home side were in front again when some good passing got them into the area where their cen- tre-forward made no mistake.

As the game moved towards a close, Wexford pressed forward in numbers looking for an equaliser and were almost rewarded but their shot came back off the crossbar, with M.G.L. doing enough to hold on for the 2-1 win.

Both teams will be in action again in two weeks’ time when they head to take on the Midlands League. They are still sitting strong in both groups and qualification for the Gaynor Cup in Limerick now looks almost a certainty.

North End and Forth Celtic played out a 2-2 draw in Drinagh on Sunday morning, a point that ensures the home side’s Premier place for next season and relegates Cloughbawn back to Division 1.

Niamh Tormey and Cara McDonald were on target for North End while Niamh Taylor-Hughes and Ruth Hendrick replied.

Seaview kept their hopes of retaining their Premier title alive when they overcame Adamstown 2-1 with goals from Stephanie Foley and Rebecca Ritchie, while Ciara Booth scored for Adamstown.

Kilmore moved second in Division 1 after a 4-0 win away to Bree, and a point in Camolin next Sunday will see them promoted to the Premier Division. Chloe Bates, Róisín Furlong, Cora Miller and Chloe Troy were all on the scoresheet for the winners

Corach Ramblers wrapped up the Division 2 title when they overcame a stubborn Tombrack side 2-1. Both sides are promoted but Tombrack needed to win to keep alive their slim chances of winning the division.

Sal Eustace gave Ramblers the lead, with Kelli Maguire equalising for Tombrack before Shannon McDonald scored what proved to be the decisive goal for the home side.

League committee member Barry Dempsey was on hand to present the Corach side with their league trophy as they secured the second part of a potential treble.

In the other game in this division, Stoney overcame Fastnet 2-1 thanks to goals from Shendah Moran and Lisa Marie Doyle, while Kathlynn Gabbett scored for Fastnet.

Cushinstown travelled to Shelburne in the Division 3 Cup quarter-final and caused a minor upset when overcoming the home side 2-1. Chloe Byrne scored a penalty for the hosts.

The second set of trials for the Wexford Women’s League Senior squad will take place next Wednesday in Curracloe United’s pitch, with players to be registered and ready to start by 8 p.m.

Last Wednesday’s trials went very well and manager Wayne Gregg was delighted. Any player who is interested and has not already done so, should contact Wayne Gregg on 087-6808411.
