NEW ROSS SENIORS

After all the rain of the previous few days, we had a dry but windy Thursday for our outing last week.

A stiff southerly wind contrived to keep the scores down from the twelve competing teams. However, as usual, there was one team which bettered the conditions much better than the rest, and the final result was a convincing win for that quartet.

A lot of the dream teams who looked good on paper failed to deliver and that is the beauty of the draw - one does not know what combination it might throw up.

There is always a surprise packet among the competing teams every week, and last Thursday was no exception

Putting together two nines of 50 and 51 points respectively, the team of Patsy Farrell (20), Richie Byrne (21), Jamesie Wallace (21) and Martin Burke (25) were clear winners by a distance with their excellent score of 101 points.

Second place with a final total of 96 points and on a countback over the last nine holes (48/45) went to Eamon Delaney (17), Richie Aylward (19), Tony Sexton (22) and Les Jastrebski (25).

On the same score (96 points), F. Coughlan (16), Mikey Lee (19), Frank Boyle (23), and Michael Long (23) finished third.

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Jim Kehoe on the ninth hole and Larry Shannon on the eleventh.

NEW ROSS LADIES

The Wednesday, February 20, competition, a 14-hole stableford sponsored by Albert’s Hair Salon, was postponed due to bad weather and the low number of entries. It will be played at a later date.

This week’s competition (Wednesday, February 27) is 14 holes and sponsored by Declan Joyce Solicitors.

Slots for the nine-hole competition are available on the timesheet also.

There will be a presentation on February 27 at 6.30 p.m. The presentation will include the competitions sponsored by Wallace’s Wellingtonbridge and Declan Joyce Solicitors. Prize-winners should attend or make their apologies and nominate someone to accept the prize for them.

Prizes will also be presented for the winter league competition: 1, Magic Maggies; 2, Par to Bar; 3, Birdie Babes.

Hopefully all winning team members will be able to make the presentation.

The fixtures booklet for this year is going to print on Monday and we should have it very soon.

Our first 18-hole competition will take place on Wednesday, March 6.

PAULINE’S SOCIETY

Gowran Park hosted our February outing, for what turned out to be a very enjoyable experience on a course that was in excellent condition.

The format was a scramble, better ball three-man team. Once again this proved to be popular among members and visitors alike.

That man Colin Fenlon led his team-mates, Willie Rochford and Frank McGuinness, to victory. Second place went to Pat Furlong and Paddy Delaney who had to play as a two-man team due to a late abstention. They had their handicap adjusted upwards as a consequence of the defection.

In third place came Michael Jordan, Liam Connolly and Marty Kielty. Once again we had both nearest to the pin prizes won by a visitor, Johnny Maher. This was a fair achievement by any standard, so well done Johnny.

Williamstown golf course will be the venue on Saturday, March 9, with a tee-off time of 10 a.m., and this will be the occasion of President Pat Furlong’s outing. We would ask that as many members and visitors as possible would make the effort to support this competition and honour Pat who has been a sterling clubman over the past 20 years.

This outing will be a singles competition stableford and will have a big bearing on the points situation that will ultimately lead to the player of the year emerging.

Captain’s day in our final outing in April will also count as an indicator of who will emerge as player of the year. The usual sheet will be available in Pauline’s newly refurbished bar to facilitate those who intend to play in the President’s day competition.
