ST CORMAC’S NEWS

The Youths’ team were out against Bridge Rovers on Saturday, February 16, and were first on the score sheet thanks to dominating the first 20 minutes of play. Harry Ellix sent a long range pass to Ciarán Walsh, who spotted Liam Walsh perfectly placed for a goal shot. Liam had no hesitation in finishing the move to give our lads the lead. David O’Gorman bamboozled the Bridge keeper with a stylish back flick and we went 2-0 ahead. Bridge fought back into the game and at the break they only trailed by a goal. Another fine score the other side of the interval saw them draw level and with only 25 minutes left Ciarán Walsh was red-carded. The hosts pressed home their advantage and took the lead and seemed set to collect the points. However, player-of-the-match, Daire Swords, rallied the defence and set up some slick penetrating attacks that could only be stopped by Bridge fouling the attacker. Daire converted one of these frees to make sure his team shared the points with a 3-3 result.

The following day, the ladies suffered the heartbreak of a 1-0 defeat against their rival New Ross in a title-deciding fixture. A draw would have been enough to give our girls the title but it was not to be. Michelle D’Arcy and Ailish O’Connor were the stars for Cormac’s in a bittersweet finish to their league campaign.

The men’s ‘B’ team also lost, crashing 1-5 out of the Gynn Jones cup to Shamrock Rovers. Short of some regulars, they drafted in some of the Youths’ players and Daire Swords set up Ray O’Brien the team’s only score of the game.

The ‘A’ team, out against Enniscorthy Town in the Neil O’Sullivan cup, went down 1-3 after a very tough exciting game. Playing with the wind, they saw the town side reduced to 10 players inside the first half-an-hour, just before Matthew Dunne gave us a 1-0 lead with a 25 metre screamer. Despite being a man down, Enniscorthy dominated the second-half and ran out deserved 3-1 winners in the end.
