ENNISCORTHY
It has been a very busy April to date at the club. Our Monday opens began on the first of the month, with Gerry O’Connor winning with 38 points on the last nine.
He completed a unique double by winning again the following Monday with 40 points, followed by Tom Kielthy, also with 40 points. Martin Sludds and visitor Rhys Clarke also finished in the prizes.
The ever-popular Wednesday nine-hole kicked off again on April 3. These are now qualifying competitions and winter rules are gone.
A total of 60 played, with Niall Murphy (11) winning with 20 points. Mick Coffey (6), Owen Mullarkey (13), Vincent Byrne (16) and Robert Hegarty (21) took the category prizes.
The following Wednesday 80 played, with James Morrissey (5) winning with 21 points. Category prizes were won by Eoin Doyle, John Colclough, David Boland and John Tobin.
Fears that introducing nine-hole qualifying might reduce player numbers were unfounded, and the competition remains as popular as ever.
April’s open Seniors attracted 117 players to the Garahy Pharmacy-sponsored competition. Local members made a clean sweep of the prizes, with Danny Kearney (14) shooting 39 points to pip James Gilbert (5) on a countback.
Larry O’Connor (9), John Doyle (8) and Jim Carty (19) also finished in the prizes.
Thank you to all our visitors who make this a very successful competition, with the next one scheduled for May 8.
On the weekend of April 6-7 we had the Kilcannon Garden Centre-sponsored singles stableford competition.
A total of 125 played, with the ever-popular Ger Turner receiving first prize from sometimes playing partner Ben Bernie, having shot a great 42 points.
Rory McCauley (11) finished second with 40 points. Nigel Cullen (4), Jim Rigley (12), John Grannell (8) and Con Fleming (19) took the remaining prizes.
Our first monthly medal took place on April 13-14 in very difficult conditions on both days. The Nicky Cahill NCRS-sponsored competition attracted one hundred players, with David Mernagh (6), fresh from hurling with Oylegate on Saturday evening, winning with a net 70 on Sunday. There’s plenty of potential here as David was a Junior up to the end of 2018.
James Morrissey (5) shot a fine 70 to take second place, with Jason Rackard (+1) taking the gross. Also featuring were Len Hall (18), Pat Gaffney (18) and the returning Hughie O’Connor (11).
Three club teams were playing the same weekend. On Friday our Barton Cup team had an impressive win away to Waterford, winning two away and one at home.
On Saturday our Juniors lost to Carlow in the Fred Daly. Losing on the 18th and 21st holes away, they came very close to a win in very tough conditions.
Finally, our defending Provincial Towns team met Woodenbridge in their first round match, with five away and four at home.
Winning the first two matches in Woodenbridge set them up for a comfortable victory, and they face Courtown in the next round. Lots of matches are coming up in the next month, so best of luck to all.
