Blackwater GAA NOTES

Inch Road Nigglers won the 2019 Michael Murphy Parish League in one of the most exciting Parish Leagues yet. The Fenians still yet to win a game, looked on course to lost to the Heroes after Shane O’Learys goal in the first half but a Mossy Murphy goal right before half time had the Heroes leading by three. The Fenians though looking for revenge for a defeat to the Heroes for the past two years in a row started the second half at blistering pace and were ahead going into the final five minutes. But that all changed when Mossy broke free yet again and placed a lovely handpass to his brother Ollie, who pulled to an empty net. The final score was 2-07 to 1-06 in the end.

The second game like the first was exciting up to the finish between Inch Road Nigglers and Island Rangers. The Rangers were four points to one up at half time and looked confortable but the Nigglers fought back well to end the game a draw. The Rangers were guilty of missing a chance just before the end to win.

For a second year in a row, a semi was decided by a free taking competition with the Nigglers coming out on top. So the Rangers like the Fenians also still waiting for a victory in the competition.

The final was a thrilling one with the Heroes leading 4-1 at half time but the Nigglers had a wind in the second period. Free taking was the order of the day with both Pad and Dean Wright keeping the scoreboard ticking over. The Heroes edged in front with six left which meant the Nigglers needed something special. They won a free on the 35 yard line and Dean Wright stepped up and drilled a low ball past a number of bodies into the goal. Darren Byrne followed this up with an exceptional point from near the sideline while further scores from Dean Wright and Niall McLoughlin caused the upset with the pre-tournament favourites losing their title. Final score was 1-09 to Nigglers and 0-07 to the Heroes.

The annual Christmas Day swim took place at Ballinesker Beach. Thanks to everyone who took part.

Our intermediate and junior b hurlers are back in training under the careful eye of the manager James Donoghue. Here’s hoping to a successful 2020.

Oulart RECENT BEREAVEMENTS

It was with profound sadness that the parishioners of Oulart heard of the death of Mrs Maureen Wade, Oulartwick, who passed to her eternal reward on New Year’s Eve, in Morecambe, Lancashire. The sympathy of the community is extended to her grieving husband Jimmy, daughter Jane Bailey, son-in-law Graham, two grandchildren, Emma and Sophie, three great-grandchildren, extended family and a wide circle of friends.

Living in Oulart for more than 40 years, Maureen and master-thatcher Jimmy were the proprietors of the famous Sumobi Kennels, from where their Italian Greyhounds were prize-winners at all the leading Dog Shows at home and abroad. Maureen was also a respected judge on the canine circuit.

The late Maureen and her husband Jimmy were leading players in Oulart Pantomimes down through the years and they also unselfishly lent their creative talents to the making of props. They were greatly respected and very valued members of the Oulart community and will be sorely missed.

Maureen’s funeral will take place in Morecambe on January 15. The family have requested no flowers please. Donations if desired to St John’s Hospice, Morecambe. Solas na bh.
