NEWROSSSENIORS

With the Christmas festivities well over, we had our first outing of 2020 on Thursday.

Despite a number of players being absent through injury and the raging ‘flu virus, we had a great turn-out of 13 teams.

Weather conditions were almost perfect - calm, dry, overhead and underfoot. The cobwebs were well and truly dusted down as far as scoring was concerned, and the high scoring pattern of 2019 continued unabated into 2020.

The ‘Man from Marley’, one Michael Kavanagh, backed up by team-mates Willie Whitty, Frank Boyle and Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan, took first prize and the bragging rights in our first outing of the year with 102 points.

Hot on their heels in second place with 101 points came Jim ‘Ross’ Ryan, Richie Aylward, Martin Forristal and the inimitable Seán O hUginn.

The third spot was filled by Pat Doyle, Billy Redmond, Kenny Irwin and Martin Hartley with 94 points. Only one nearest the pin prize was won, by Pat Doyle on the ninth hole.

Best wishes for speedy recoveries go to Tony Harford (ankle injury sustained playing the game) and Fr. Jim Curtis (ankle injury sustained in a traffic accident).

Bon voyage to Willie Whitty who is off on his annual trip to the sunshine state of Florida. We’re looking forward to a well-tanned Willie on his return some time in April.

BALLYMONEY

Wednesday nine-hole competition (mixed): 1, Tom Doolan (12), 22 points; 2, Brian Moore (23), 20 points.

A very strong wind on Saturday morning and expected rain meant that only a handful of players braved the conditions.

The subsequent rain caused the closure of the course, and the singles stableford competition didn’t go ahead.

Deepest sympathies from all at the club to the Breen family on the loss of their dear mother, Margaret, who sadly passed away on Friday. May she rest in peace.

NEWROSS

The course was well tested by the wind and rain that arrived on Friday night and stayed through Saturday. Recent work on draining the fairways proved once again how invaluable the course staff are.
