MAN IN HIS FORTIES REMAINS IN HOSPITAL AFTER BEING HIT BY CAR DURING INCIDENT

- By BRENDAN KEANE

THERE were horrific scenes in Enniscorthy last week when a man was run over by a car following a brawl in the middle of an estate, resulting in nine people being arrested and questioned.

One person appeared before the district court yesterday while two others are expected to appear before the courts this morning.

The other six people were all released without charge, however, a spokesperson for Enniscorthy Gardai said a file on the entire matter is being prepared for the DPP and it is expected that further charges will be proferred in the coming weeks depending on the DPPs direction.

The incident occurred in Fr Murphy Park at around 8 p.m. on Tuesday when two rival groups tangled with each other, armed with what’s believed to have been bats and bars.

It’s believed one of the groups had driven from Wexford town to Enniscorthy and when they arrived were confronted by a group of local men and violence broke out.

The injured man, who is in his 40s, is from the area and though his injuries are serious they are not believed to be life-threatening.

A video apparently depicting the incident was circulated widely online and seemed to show a man being hit by a car and being driven over.

The gardai are appealing for information from anyone who may have witnessed the event.

The gardai received reports about the incident at approximately 8 p.m. and, upon arrival, observed a man on the ground outside St Senan’s Primary School.

The injured man, who is in his 40s, is from the area.

He received serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken from the scene by ambulance to Wexford General Hospital.

‘Following inquiries, it was reported that a silver Open Meriva collided with the man at this location and then left the scene,’ said a spokesperson for the gardai.

The matter became a hit-and-run incident when the car left the scene after colliding with the man who was thrown into the air by the force of the collision.

It’s believed that a vehicle found a short time later partially burnt out on the South Slob near Wexford town was the same vehicle that hit the man in Enniscorthy.

Gardai in Enniscorthy are carrying out a full investigation into the matter and are appealing for anyone with information about any of the incidents to come forward.

They are also appealing for anyone who may have camera footage – including dashcam footage or phone footage – to make such film available to the gardai.

Any road users who may have encountered the silver Opel Meriva after it left the scene in Enniscorthy are also asked to contact the gardaí.

The garda spokesperson in Enniscorthy said that nine people were arrested and questioned in Wexford and Enniscorthy Garda Stations under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

‘A file is being prepared for the DPP in relation to the entire incident,’ said the spokesperson.

The man who was hit is believed to be awaiting transfer to a hospital in Dublin for further treatment.

All information forwarded to the gardaí will be treated in strict confidence and Enniscorthy Garda Station can be contacted on 053 9233534.

Meanwhile, a young man has had his case adjourned to Wexford District Court on May 11 in connection with the incident.

Jim Bob Connors of 17, Talbot Green, Wexford was remanded in custody on a charge of producing a baseball bat in the course of a dispute at Fr Murphy Park on April 21.

The defendant who is 20 years old, was brought before the court last week on the charge.

He was due to appear by video link from Clover Hill Prison on Monday morning, but the court was informed he was unable to appear for medical reasons.

Judge Brian O’Shea remanded the accused to appear before Wexford District Court on May 11.
