Catching: hurling skill of the week

UNDER-7

CHEST CATCH 1) Catching hand across chest.

2) Palm facing up, cupped in ‘claw’ position.

3) Player aims to catch the bean bag in their hand in chest position.

ACTIVITY

Bean bag or rolled up socks. Parent or sibling throws bean bag underarm, lobbed (players can regress to two-handed catch if needed).

Challenge: Can you get ten chest catches in a row?

UNDER-11

HIGH CATCH ON THE MOVE

1) Extend catching hand out high above head, with bas of the hurl behind hand (slight gap) as the ball is coming. 2) Hand in ‘claw’ shape. 3) Aim to catch the ball with fingers, not palm.

4) Player must be jumping when they catch the ball.

ACTIVITY Sliothar or tennis ball. Parent or sibling throws the ball underarm, lobbed and high.

Challenge: How many jumping high catches can you get in one minute?

UNDER-13

HIGH CATCH ON THE MOVE - EMPHASIS ON ATTACKING

THE BALL

1) Extend catching hand out high above head, with bas of the hurl behind hand (slight gap) as the ball is coming. 2) Hand in ‘claw’ shape. 3) Aim to catch the ball with fingers, not palm.

4) Player must run to the ball and jump when they catch the ball.

ACTIVITY Sliothar or tennis ball; cone (marker); wall. Set a marker 20 metres from the wall.

Strike the ball high off the wall, and attempt a jumping catch moving forward.

Collect the ball and go back around the cone each time.

Challenge: How many jumping high catches can you get in one minute?

HIGH CATCH 1) Catching hand stretched out high above head.

2) Bas of the hurl behind hand (slight gap).

3) Hand in ‘claw’ shape. 4) Aim to catch the ball with fingers, not palm.

ACTIVITY Smart touch sliothar or tennis ball.

Parent or sibling throws ball underarm, lobbed and high.

Challenge: After each catch, take one step backwards - how many steps can you get to?

UNDER-15/17

HIGH CATCH ON THE MOVE - EMPHASIS ON ATTACKING

THE BALL

1) Extend catching hand out high above head, with bas of the hurl behind hand (slight gap) as the ball is coming. 2) Hand in ‘claw’ shape. 3) Aim to catch the ball with fingers, not palm.

4) Player must run to the ball and jump when they catch the ball - aim to meet ball at highest point possible.

ACTIVITY Sliothar or tennis ball; cone (marker); wall.

Set a marker 25 metres from the wall.

Strike the ball high off the wall and attempt a jumping catch moving forward.

Collect the ball and go back around the cone each time - striking off a different side each time.

Challenge: How many jumping high catches can you get in one minute?
