NEWS IN BRIEF

-

LEAD UP IN SMOKE: There was an unexpected early conclusion to the League of Ireland First Division clash between Wexford Youths and Athlone Town in Ferrycarrig Park on May 22, 2015.

The hosts were leading 2-0 at half-time, but the referee was forced to call a premature halt when the generator caught fire during the interval, leaving the ground without floodlights.

Youths played some quality football before the action concluded, with Andy Mulligan’s run to the byline and cross setting up Aidan Keenan for the lead goal in the third minute.

And they struck again before the first quarter was over when defender Gary Delaney rose highest to head a Conor English corner beyond netminder Shane Cusack.

JUNIORS SCORE FREELY: Wexford bridged an incredible gap of eight years since their last victory in the Leinster Junior football championship with a pillar to post win over a weak Wicklow side in Bellefield on May 20, 2015.
