School building scandal grows

Fingal Independent - - NEWS - By JOHN MANNING

WHAT began as the closure of one part of a Balbriggan school a week ago has grown into a national scandal as 42 schools were examined for possible structural defects.

While there is no evidence that any of those 42 schools have the same ‘serious structural issues’ as Ardgillan Community School, the same builder was involved in all of those projects which are now under examination as a precaution.

Among those 42 schools is another local school in Rush and Lusk Educate Together NS but there is no evidence that anything is wrong with that building, as it stands.

Meanwhile, school life goes on at Ardgillan Community College with the school community working hard to try to deliver its classes under extraordinary circumstances.

In recent message to parents and guardians of children at the school, school principal, Michael O’leary wrote: ‘Thank you very much for your co-operation and support today and over the coming weeks.

‘As you are already aware Phase 1 of our building has been closed due to Health & Safety concerns.

‘This means a number of classrooms are now out of use. To maximise space in Phase 2 of our building we have now moved to student based classrooms.

This has worked very well today (Thursday, October 25) and our staff and students have come together as a school community and showed great team work.’

He told concerned parents: ‘We are in the process of organising more accommodation to meet the needs of all our students.

‘ We will keep you informed of all decisions made as we go forward.

‘By working together and supporting each other we will overcome this challenging situation and ensure the continuation of the excellent teaching and learning in our college.’

The scandal has also closed two schools in the Dublin 15 area of Fingal with the full extend of the problem still unknown.
