A pre-school in Loughshinny held a special children’s Halloween fancy dress fundraiser last week to raise money for one of their children, who has special needs.

As part of the fundraiser, Bizzy B’s presented a children’s Halloween catwalk show, with the youngsters parading their costumes in ghoulish style.

Parents and grandparents were invited to the event, with a coffee morning held afterwards, as well as a puppet show for the children. The event was held to kick-off a Gofundme page for one of the children, Frank Kennedy (aged 3), who has autism.

The pre-school is hoping to raise enough money to pay for a specialist teacher to help Frank achieve his full potential, as it says the Government has fallen short in providing funds.

Brenda Lattimore of Bizzy B’s says: ‘We have a really good candidate for the job, but we need to raise funds to employ her. We need to raise about €30,000, and we said we’d get behind it and raise as much as we can, because Frank’s a gorgeous little boy.

‘Frank has a diagnosis of autism, and with autism the ability to engage isn’t there, so it’s about peeling back a bit of that surface and bringing him out. He’s a very happy little boy and very much on the cusp of getting words and things like that. If we can work with him now, he has a very bright future, but if we don’t, he won’t reach his full potential.’

‘The anomaly is’, Brenda continues, ‘if Frank’s parents decided to look after him at home, they could apply for a home tuition grant that would cost the government €37.50 an hour, instead of paying about €9.50 an hour to the pre-school. We can’t get the home tuition grant for this girl to come up here, because she wouldn’t be a member of staff.’

Brenda points out that if children with special needs are catered for when they’re young, it has a huge impact on their development. The Bizzy B’s Gofundme page can be found by searching ‘Frank’sfundbizzybs’.
