Cannabis was for man’s ‘anx­i­ety’

A MAN caught with cannabis was tak­ing the drug to help him as he suf­fers from anx­i­ety, a court has heard.

Shane Buck­ley (26) of Seatown Vil­las in Swords pleaded guilty to be­ing in un­law­ful pos­ses­sion of the drug which was worth €25 at Swords Road on June 10.. He has no pre­vi­ous con­vic­tions.swords District Court heard the de­fen­dant co-op­er­ated with gar­dai and has not come to garda at­ten­tion since.

De­fence bar­ris­ter An­nette Kealy said the 25-year-old, who lives at home, has an in­ter­est in web­site de­vel­op­ment and has been ac­cepted to com­plete a col­lege course in com­put­ers to progress his self-taught skills.

‘He suf­fers anx­i­ety and took cannabis to help him but he re­alises he shouldn’t do this,’ said Ms Kealy.

‘He has €300 as a char­i­ta­ble do­na­tion if the court is will­ing to ac­cept it,’ she added.

Judge Der­mot Dempsey struck the case out af­ter the char­i­ta­ble do­na­tion was handed over. He al­lo­cated the money to Child­hood Can­cer Foun­da­tion.
