Ro­bot­ics pro­grammes to en­cour­age STEM in­ter­est

TWO ro­bot­ics pro­grammes will take place in Fin­gal County Coun­cil Of­fices as part of the STEM (Sci­ence, Tech­nol­ogy, En­gi­neer­ing and Maths) pro­gramme.

Both events run from 10am un­til 4pm on Satur­day Novem­ber 24, in Grove Road, Blan­chard­stown and Satur­day De­cem­ber 1, in The Atrium in County Hall, Swords.

One of Ire­land’s lead­ing cre­ators of en­ter­tain­ment and ed­u­ca­tional ro­bot­ics, Mecha­trons, will be­gin the day with ‘In­ge­nious Ma­chines’.

The com­pany have con­sulted on and cre­ated amaz­ing spe­cial ef­fects and props for movies and tele­vi­sion shows.

Their ex­hibit in­cludes a Minecraft Creeper, R2D2 and ‘a1-ex’, a walk­ing, talk­ing ‘cy­ber life form’ from an­other planet.

Fin­gal’s County Li­brar­ian, Betty Board­man said: ‘With such a young and di­verse pop­u­la­tion in Fin­gal, it is vi­tal that we in­vest in re­sources that al­low them to ex­plore sci­ence, tech­nol­ogy, en­gi­neer­ing and maths.

‘Pro­grammes like the Ro­bot­ics work­shops al­low young peo­ple to en­gage with STEM sub­jects in a stim­u­lat­ing and cre­ative way.’

Mecha­trons are also of­fer­ing three SESCA Ro­bot­ics Work­shops for ages 12+, us­ing ‘Ar­duino-based SESCA ro­bot­ics kits.’

These work­shops will take place from 10.30am un­til 11.30am; 12.30pm un­til 1.30pm, and 2.30pm un­til 3.30pm.

At 1:30pm, the com­pany will fa­cil­i­tate a pre­sen­ta­tion by world-renowned ro­bot­ics ex­pert Pro­fes­sor Peter Red­mond.

At this unique event, Pro­fes­sor Red­mond will take the au­di­ence on a fas­ci­nat­ing and en­thralling jour­ney that prom­ises to ‘blur the bound­aries be­tween ro­bots in sci­ence fic­tion, and ro­bots in real life.’
