Ryan to oppose airport noise Bill
BRENDAN Ryan, Labour Party TD for Dublin Fingal is opposing the Airport Noise Regulation Bill which is due to be debated in the Dáil before Christmas.
Deputy Ryan said: ‘There are a number of things in this Bill which I am against but in particular I believe that the decision to choose Fingal County Council as the competent authority for noise monitoring under EU Regulation 598/14is the incorrect one.
‘This Bill has been delayed and delayed by Government as they are aware there is massive opposition to this Bill and real concerns regarding the nomination of Fingal County Council as the competent authority.
‘We should be appointing the Commission for Aviation Regulation (CAR) as the competent authority.’
Deputy Ryan explained: ‘The daa are the largest rate payer in Fingal and as such, there are valid questions over how impartial Fingal can be in the eyes of the public when they already share such a close relationship with the daa.
‘It would be much more comforting for all concerned if the Minister appointed the Irish Aviation Authority. There is still time to do this.’
He said: ‘As this moves towards a Dáil debate, all eyes will be on Fianna Fáil as they have the numbers to block this Bill. Their support for this minority Government will be tested and if Fianna Fáil roll over and let the people down then I am sure it will not be forgotten.’ He said defeating the Bill would require the opposition to pull together.
