More ‘Hear t’break as Columbas crash out
S HEART/KILLINARDEN 1 COLUMBAS ROVERS 1
COLUMBAS Rovers’ bad luck in the cups this season continued as they were edged out by Sacred Heart/killinarden in Tallaght on Saturday afternoon via a penalty shootout.
Des Konopka’s side have now exited four cup competitions this season after extra time and/or penalties.
Columbas looked rusty early on - no surprise given that this was their first match in six weeks - but gradually they gained control of midfield and with their first attack they took the lead. Mick Mcloughlin crossed the ball to Mark Cashin who toe-poked the ball home.
Columbas almost doubled their lead just before half-time when Davy Browne chipped the keeper, only to see his shot hit the underside of the bar.
Sacred Heart/killinarden survived a wave of pressure from Rovers in the second half before equalising with 15 to go to send the game to extra time.
Columbas dominated during the extra 30 minutes, with Brian Finnegan hitting the post late on, but try as they might they just couldn’t score that crucial second goal and Sacred Heart proved faultless in the penalty shootout and progressed 5-3. COLUMBAS ROVERS: Darragh Cahill, Mick Mcloughlin, Karl Ledwidge, Andy Green, Brendan Quinn (Mike Kennedy), Ben Oldfield, Paul Mcewan, Stephen O’callaghan, Jason Gilchrist, Davy Brown (Brian Finnegan), Mark Cashin (Damien Daly).
