THE term undis­puted cham­pion is mainly used in the pro­fes­sional box­ing world, but if there’s an equiv­a­lent in the am­a­teur game then Swords boxer John Fay has ticked all the boxes in 2018. Box­ing at Boy 3 54kg, The Lusk CS pupil com­pleted the Dublin League and Cham­pi­onship dou­ble, but not con­tent with dom­i­nat­ing his own county he also won the Louth and Meath Cham­pi­onship and beat the reign­ing All-ire­land cham­pion in his class en route to win­ning the Wex­ford In­ter­na­tional Tour­na­ment. Af­ter los­ing the 2017 All-ire­land fi­nal, go­ing one bet­ter was the big tar­get this year and he duly clinched the na­tional ti­tle, com­plet­ing a 20-fight un­beaten streak. He then won the na­tional cadet cham­pi­onship, which earned him a shot at the Euro­peans where he claimed bronze.
