A Green Wave demolished everything in its wake as Green Party candidate, Cllr Joe O’brien became Fingal’s newest TD in a comprehensive victory in the Dublin Fingal by-election.

It’s been a dramatic year for O’brien, after several attempts at success at the ballot box, he’s won two elections in six months, first securing a seat on Fingal County Council last May and now grabbing a seat in the Dáil.

Speaking in the wake of his dramatic victory, he told the Fingal Independent: ‘It feels very good. I feel privileged, I feel honoured and I feel like I need to make the best use possible of the new few months ahead of me and use it to serve the people of Dublin Fingal because it might be the only opportunity I have.

‘I’ve got to prove myself as much as one can in a couple of months. The thing is to take the energy of the campaign into my role as a TD now.’

He does not see the next few months as a trial run for the General Election though and explained: ‘It’s the real thing, people have been down a TD for six months and there are a lot of issues out there that can’t wait until the General Election to be addressed.’
