Gorey shoppers go bread crazy!

-

Shoppers across Wexford cleared supermarket shelves as they stocked up on the essentials before Storm Emma and The Beast from East landed on Friday.

General Manager for Pettitt’s SuperValu Aidan Doyle said they ran out of bread early in the week, along with other necessary items including milk, firelighters and flour.

‘We were delighted to have our instore bakery as we were able to react quickly by increasing our volumes of bread made in branch and this helped somewhat with bread levels overall,’ said Mr Doyle.

Mr Doyle said deliveries that are due Thursday and Friday will be delayed by a day or two due to the bad weather. ‘The suppliers could not get to Musgrave Marketplace and this delays deliveries for us,’ added Mr Doyle.

Pettitt’s SuperValu in Gorey stayed open on Thursday until 3 p.m., and closed on Friday.

Sean Stafford of Stafford Bakery said they were under extreme pressure last week with the lead up to the snow storm.

‘We were working 24-hours a day trying to get bread out,’ added Mr Stafford ‘We closed on Friday and did not deliver until early Sunday morning.’

Sean said local staff who could safely make it to the bakery came in over the weekend to help relieve some of the pressure.

Kevin O’Shea of O’Shea’s Londis Supermarket in New Ross said things started to get back to normal on Monday (yesterday).

‘We were very busy early in the week with everything before the storm and absolutely ran off our feet,’ said Mr O’Shea. ‘But thankfully all is starting to settle again and deliveries are coming in.’
