Seal rescue training is a real success
Seal Rescue Ireland based in Courtown held a Rescue Network Volunteer Training day last week.
Fourteen eager people attended the training day, where they learned the history of Seal Rescue Ireland; what happens when a call is received about a seal; types of seals in Ireland; how to tell the difference between a healthy and unhealthy seal; how to handle a seal; how to transport a seal; stages of seal rehab; and a seal release.
The busy charity operates the only seal rehabilitation facility in Ireland and therefore responds to nationwide queries or emergencies.
It was established in 2012 and now manages a network of over 800 volunteers from all over the country.
Despite limited resources, last year SRI successfully rehabilitated and released an impressive 74% of the 112 seal pups admitted. They also run very active educational programs and community outreach events to promote ocean conservation and sustainability.
Seal Rescue Ireland advises those who come across seal pups on a beach to keep a safe distance from the seal, at least 200, and keep all dogs on leads.
If the seal appears to be in distress, call the 24-hour rescue hot-line 087 1955393 as soon as possible, and never attempt to put the pup back in the water.
