Swimmers in Courtown under threat from jet-ski users

-

SWIMMERS in Courtown and Cahore are under threat from jet-ski users who are flaunting the rules by driving their machines into areas clearly marked for swimming.

It has led to widespread condemnation of the jet-ski drivers, whose behaviour could potentially cause a serious accident.

Water Safety Development Officer of Wexford County Council Tom Doyle said it is an ongoing problem all the time and they are getting in the way of swimmers.

North Wexford beaches have not seen such large crowds like this since Ireland’s last heatwave in the eighties.

Local councillor Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin said to keep everyone safe they need to clamp down on the irresponsible use of jet-skis that have been racing into Courtown Harbour recently.

‘There have been a number of near misses with swimmers which could have resulted in a fatality,’ added Cllr Ó Suilleabháin. ‘Bye-laws are in place, however the council does not have adequate staff to police the coastline.

‘We need a harbour-master to police Courtown, Cahore and north Wexford coastline, even a temporary position.’

Councillor Malcolm Byrne said some jet-skiers are being irresponsible and is encouraging them to obey the rules.

‘We have had a few incidents where they have come right into the swimming areas,’ said Cllr Byrne. ‘This is a lethal combination. It is clearly marked where they can operate and this is in the interest of all beach users.’ Cllr Byrne also pointed out that new line markings are bring painted at the slipways in Courtown and Cahore, and is urging motorists to respect them to ensure that emergency services have access to the water.
