THE or­gan­is­ers of a re­cent church gate col­lec­tion in Gorey have ex­pressed grat­i­tude to ev­ery­one who sup­ported it. The col­lec­tion, which is an an­nual ini­tia­tive, took place out­side St Michael’s Church and was or­gan­ised to raise money for Self Help Africa.

Through­out the week­end 15 dif­fer­ent vol­un­teers col­lected money and a record €1,191.50 was raised for the or­gan­i­sa­tion much to the de­light of all in­volved.

‘The record amount of €1,191.50 was col­lected by 15 dif­fer­ent vol­un­teer col­lec­tors over the week­end,’ said Jim Kir­wan, who or­gan­ised the col­lec­tion. ‘This money goes to­wards projects in nine African coun­tries sup­port­ing small farm­ers and their fam­i­lies.’

Mr Kir­wan pointed out that many of the farm­ers are women and the or­gan­i­sa­tion gives them as­sis­tance in var­i­ous ways.

He said: ‘Sin­cere thanks to all who as­sisted in the col­lec­tion and in­deed, to those who con­trib­uted so gen­er­ously.’
